So a bit more, I jumped a little as the next part was to add four beams at the rear to support the lower hatch but looking at the drawings and booklet they didn't seam to fit where I would have expected them too. So these are the hatches ready to go in. So now I have them I can workout the beams... The instructions have you place the beams at these measurements, which might be ok for some. But when you place the hatch in the centre of the structure the ends of the hatch sit right on the sides of the beams. Fine the hatch is supported but what about the decking, so I moved them 2mm sideways, which will allow me some support for the decking. As I've moved them, I also decided to position the two other beams in the centre of the space that way left, this will give enough support for the decking. Before these are meant to be added your meant to start the plank of the deck, I left this as I need to add some more supports for the deck planks as there is no centre support except for the three supports that make up the framework. So after some searching I found out the deck planks would possible have been either 6' 9' or 12' long so knowing this I can work out my planks. I'll be going with the 12' long version which if my maths is correct will be 160mm long. My maths isn't great so 12' is 144", divided 144" by 23 = 6.3" (23 as the scale is 1/23) or 160mm which works out about right to the frames. The parts in these older kits are really not as accurate in their fit as you'd hope to find but that is half the fun, finding the faults and putting them right.... From what I'm seeing you're off to a great start and the build has the makings of being a beautiful and interesting display piece when done.... .. Look forward to seeing more of this one.... Regards Alan

Started on the lower decks, I added some extra piece just of support which I've marked with a red dot. I've temeraraly tacked a piece along one of the side to act as a marker for the ends of the planks. The planking I decided to do it my way and not the instructions way, the instructions tell you to make a slight cut in the top of the wood piece to simulate the joints of the planks on the runs, instead I've cut my planks to the length I need as long as there not long then 160mm. I'am following the instructions by adding a piece of darker wood to simulate the caulking effect, but I'm also adding a small piece between the end joints. I have 20 piece of this wood to use as decks but some are darker then the others so as you see I'm mixing them up, once sealed it should hopefully look nice. But if not theres so much going on inside I don't think your'll see a lot of the decks Building:- 1919 https://forum.model-spac...=339517&#post339517 - Class 08 - https://forum.model-spac...spx?g=posts&t=34197 Below Decks - https://forum.model-spac...sts&m=339187#339187

You're making a grand job of it so far. The deck planking looks great. Happy building David

Very nice indeed.... .. Cutting the planks to length gives a much more authentic look and is the way I prefer to do decking..... Keep the pics coming.... Regards Alan

Thanks for looking in peeps So the lower deck is 99% done, can't finish it just yet as we need to removed the three rear supports later when we add the support columns. I done it so the hatch can be removed at the moment until I've sanded the deck down. While doing the lower deck I've made up the two canon's, wanted these so I can check the hight of the opening in the hull side. Know I've also made a little change to these as I've made them more towards photos I found of HMS Surprise which I'm sure you all know from the film The Far Side of the World. So in the photos the Left one is how I see them and the Right is how the instructions tell you to build them. Slight difference the lower hight reach. And the same with the max hight reach Slightly different middle runners, and I've add a piece at the rear which I did cut it half afterwards. Cut down the hight wedge, it looked way to big. Hi Mustang, I love the way you’ve made your planking look with the different shades it looks fantastic, And those brass cannons look superb. Are you planning to stain the planks? I think they would look fantastic with a coat of mid sheen clear varnish to really bring out the natural look of the wood. I hope you don’t mind a suggestion. Superb work my friend!
