I found the articles where I got the answer for Q2 in the book competition to be an interesting read, here are the links

I have visited the Boston shipyard and seen the ropewalk.There is also another museum in Connecticut (Mystic seaport) that has working ropewalks and workshops where you can see how they built ships like the Constitution
