Stage 43 contains: Wooden strips 2 x 5 x 250mm.

Assemble the grating pieces from Stage 42. Apply glue to the joins of the grating pieces, to fix them all in place.

Take a 2 x 5 x 250mm strip and immerse it in warm water. After a couple of minutes remove it and wipe away excess water from it. Place the strip around the bow in the area shown in Step C of the instructions, just overlapping the gap for the stem. Then apply glue to the contact areas. Cut the excess of the strip so that it does not block the 5mm gap for the stem and is flush with the bow deck. Use a file to smooth the cut area of the strip, be careful that you do not damage the coating on the deck. Cut the areas of the strip that block the gun ports.

Continue aft adding three more strips to complete the row. When dry cut away the part of the strips covering the gun ports. Glue another strip above the previous row starting from just ahead of the bulkhead at the bow. Glue two more strips behind the first to complete the row. When the glue is completely dry remove the parts of the strips that are blocking the gun ports as well as the part of the first strip that overlaps the forward bulkhead.

Repeat Steps C to J for the port side of the hull.

Stage complete, carefully store any remaining parts in a stage labelled bag.

Stage 44 Contains: Guns, Gun carriages, Brass strip 3 x 100mm, Walnut strip 2 x 6 x 300mm, Anchor.

Cut two 65mm and four 30mm lengths from the 2 x 6 x 300mm Walnut strip.
Mark a space in the centre of one of the 65mm length, roughly 3mm wide. Glue the 30mm lengths at either end of the 65mm length, leaving a gap between them. Glue the second 65mm length on top of the rest of the stock assembly, Insert the anchor shank up through the hole in the centre of the stock, checking that it is unobstructed.

Smooth the surface of the stock with sandpaper to eliminate any rough or uneven areas. Mark the measurements shown in Step G of the instructions onto the stock, and then cut along the lines with a saw, smooth the edges with sandpaper.

Fill in the gap in the planks at the stern with an offcut of 2 x 5mm planking strip. (I chose to do this as it is deemed the correct time to do so.)

Turn the hull over and cut away the ends of the strips in a curve, as shown in Step I of the instructions. Use a half round file to smooth the cut ends of the strips. The curves need to match the shape of the supports. Repeat the process on other side of the hull.

Stage complete, carefully store any remaining parts in a stage labelled bag.

Stage 45 contains: Wooden strips 2 x 5 x 250mm

Paint the anchor stock from the previous stage with brown varnish to make it a more uniform colour and seal it. Place the brass strip up against the midpoint of the stock. And drill a hole through the strip and into the stock large enough to hold a nail. Apply glue to the nail and then lightly hammer through the hole in the strip and into the stock. Wrap the strip around the stock and cut where it meets in the centre of the stock opposite the other end of the strip. Then drill another hole and fit a nail into it, as shown on inset of Step D of the instructions. Fit three more strips to the stock, in the position shown in Step F of the instructions.

As an option for ease of assembly of the anchor stock bands, you can opt to use plastic strips to create the bands and secure with pins in the same way, then paint the bands metallic black for Wrought Iron authenticity.

Place the stock onto the Shank of the anchor, at a right angle to the flukes with the nails facing upwards. Glue the parts together in the position shown in Step G of the instructions.

Glue another two planking strips to the side of the hull, above the existing row. Complete the row with a third strip. Cut the end flush with the transom.

Cut away the areas of the strips blocking the gun ports. Smooth the edges with a file.

Stage complete, carefully store any remaining parts in a stage labelled bag.

Stage 46 contains: Cannons, Gun carriages, Nails.

Take a plank and place it halfway across frame 5. Test fit it along the edge of the false. Soften one end with water to bend around the bow, Glue the strip into place.
Secure the plank in place with nails to help hold it to the curve of the bow, drive another nail into the plank where it rests on the reinforcement.

Cut the part of the strip that overlaps the other side of the false keel. Glue and nail the next plank to to the side of the false keel starting from halfway across frame 5 and ending halfway across frame 8. Glue a final strip from halfway across frame 8 to extend past the stern as shown in Step E of the instructions. Do not nail this plank to the stern as this could cause the plank to split and the nails may protrude through the false keel.

Fit another strip from halfway across frame 4 extending past the bow, nail into place and cut away the section that overlaps the false keel. Glue and nail another strip from halfway across frame 4 to halfway across frame 7. Complete the row with another strip from the 7th to the 9th frames then from 9th aft as shown in Step H of the instructions. Cut the sections of the planks extending past the false keel at the stern.

Repeat Steps A to I on the other side of the hull. Ensure that there is still a 5mm gap between the strips at the bow.

Stage complete, carefully store any remaining parts in a stage labelled bag.

Stage 47 contains: Wooden strips 2 x 5 x 250mm.

Glue another strip above those already on the starboard bow extending past the bulkhead. Glue another strip aft of the first. Glue a third strip to complete the row. When dry cut the excess in line with the transom. Glue another two strips to the starboard side with the first overlapping the bow bulkhead. Cut the excess from the strips at the bow then file or sand flush with the bulkhead. Complete the row with another strip, when dry cut the excess flush with the transom.

Glue another two strips to the port side of the hull, with the first extending past the bow bulkhead. Complete the row with third strip, cut away the excess flush with the transom when dry. Add another row of strips above those fitted in Steps G and H of the instructions. When dry, cut away the excess at the bow and stern.

The port and starboard sides should now have the same number of planks. Sand the aft ends of the strips so that they are flush with the transom.

Stage complete, carefully store any remaining parts in a stage labelled bag.

Stage 51 contains: Planking strips 2 x 5 x 250mm.

If not already done so follow these steps for installing the dummy gunports.

Retrieve the dummy gun mounts from Stages 24, 25, 26, 31, 33 and 36. Cut the mounts from the boards and sand them smooth. Place the first mount behind one of the lower ports, and press against the planks.

When a gun port is positioned over a frame, you will need to glue a mount up against either side of the frame.

Leave the 12 main-deck gun ports, six on either side open.

Fit the gun mounts on the port side of the ship.

With a rule and a sharp pencil or similar, draw lines from corner to corner on each gunport to create a X. Once done use a map pin and push lightly on the centre of the X. Starting with a 1mm drill bit, drill each gunport in the centre of the X then use a 2mm bit to make it bigger. Ensure you keep the drill square and Parallel.

Glue a strip to the starboard side, starting at the bulkhead. Glue another two strips aft of the first to complete the row. Cut away the parts of the strips covering the gun ports and then smooth them with a file.

Repeat Steps G to I on the port side of the ship.

Stage complete, carefully store any remaining parts in a stage labelled bag.

Stage 52 contains: Rings 8mm, Brown thread 1.5mm, Brass strip 3 x 100mm, Walnut strip 2 x 6 x 300mm, Anchors.

Cut two 65mm and four 30mm lengths from the 2 x 6 x 300mm walnut strips. Mark a space in the centre of the 65mm length, roughly 3mm wide. Glue the 30mm lengths at either end of one of the 65mm lengths, as before, leaving a gap between them. Glue the second 65mm length on top of the rest of the stock assembly. Cut along the lines marked below on the stock as shown in Step E of the instructions. Then smooth the surfaces of the stock with sand paper and paint with brown varnish.

Place a brass strip up against the mid point of the stock. Drill a hole through the strip and into the stock large enough to hold a nail. Apply glue to a nail and then lightly hammer through the hole in strip and into the stock. Wrap the strip around the stock, and cut where it meets the centre of the stock opposite the other end of the strip. Then drill another hole and fit a nail into it as shown on the inset of Step H of the instructions. Fit three more strips to the stock, look at Step J for the locations.

As an option for ease of assembly of the anchor stock bands, you can opt to use plastic strips to create the bands and secure with pins in the same way, then paint the bands metallic black for Wrought Iron authenticity.

Once you have completed the first stock, repeat this stage to assemble a second.

Glue the stocks onto the shanks of the anchors at a right angle to the flukes with the nails facing upwards.

Stage complete, carefully store any remaining parts in a stage labelled bag.

Stage 53 contains: Wooden strips 2 x 5mm x 250mm.

Glue a strip from frame 4 forward, around the bow. Nail the plank into place when dry cut away the excess at the false keel. Fit another strip between frame 4 to frame 7. Make sure to nail the join between the two strips. Fit another strip between frames 7 and frame 8. Complete the row by gluing and nailing a plank from frame 8 to the stern. Remove the excess from the plank at the stern.

Fit two more Strips, one from frame 3 to frame 6, and the other from frame 6 to frame 7. Fit another strip next to the one in the previous step from frame 4 to the bow. This should create a gap. Cut away the excess strip at the false keel to allow for the stem. Fit another strip from frame 4 to frame 6. Complete the row by fitting another strip from frame 6 to frame 9. The aft end of this plank should be in contact with the row from Step E, creating a gap.

Repeat Steps A to J on the other side of the hull.

Stage complete, carefully store any remaining parts in a stage labelled bag.

Stage 54 contains: Ladder sides, Wooden strip 1 x 4 x 100mm, Walnut strip 2 x 4 x 300mm, Walnut strip 5 x 5 x 300mm, Nails.

Mark one 65mm, one 35mm, and four 18mm lengths on the 5x 5 x 300mm walnut strip. Divide the walnut strip into two parts, the 65mm and 35mm lengths as one and the four 18mm lengths and the surplus as the other. Create a mark on the first of the 18mm sections, 5mm from the edge, then make another mark 5mm from that. Cut out the section between the marks. The notch should be half of the strip deep. Smooth the surface of the notch with a file.

Carve a triangular recess into each face of the strip at the end of the 18mm section. When you have completed the first 18mm section, cut it off the rest of the strip.

Repeat steps C to G for the remaining three 18mm sections. Smooth the four sections with sand paper.

Separate the 35mm and 65mm lengths from each other. Carve the same recess into each end of these strips that you carved into the 18mm sections. Then sand the strips smooth.

Check the positions of the 18mm sections on the 35mm and 65mm sections. Glue the four uprights into position. When dry, paint the assemblies with clear varnish.

Stage complete, carefully store any remaining parts in a stage labelled bag.
