I am looking for way to create opal effect glass. This is because I need some 125mm diameter opal lamp bulbs for my home, and the only ones I can find are clear. I therefore need to be able to paint these with something that will give the effect of an opal light bulb. Any suggestions? Does anyone make any suitable paint (it must appear white, and not be possible to see the filament inside the bulb, but at the same time it must not block too much of the light)? Or can I try mixing white paint with varnish in some proportion to create the effect I need? If so, what technology would you recommend? Obviously both components would need to be mixable, which I imagine means that they must both use the same technology (e.g. polyurethane, or cellulose). And what proportion of varnish and white paint?Or can I do it by mixing white pigment with clear varnish? If so what types, and in what proportions?

Any suggestions most welcome.

Thanks - Rowan

From a safety perspective i would not recommend painting mains powered bulbs.

What you are looking for in terms of an opal finish bulb are available.

Just Google on "125mm opal light bulbs"
