Really getting to the nitty gritty now, with some nice details starting to be added. Will look fab when it's all painted. ThumpUp

Bet the fitting of all of those thousands of rivets to the hull seems like a very long time ago now eh Phil?! Blink

Thank you Kev!Cool Yes, it's starting to take shape now.

Ah, the riveting!Flapper LOL Those were the days! lol

I still have a bit more riveting to do though when I build up the rudders, fore-planes and aft-planes, but that won't be for a few weeks yet.

Phil W.

Good morning from 'The Dockyard'.

This week continues with the addition of part-works supplied items to the conning tower.

The first step was to prep the conning tower hatch by which all look-outs would gain access to the bridge.

The only thing that I didn't like about the moulded plastic hatch was the spring. So i decided to cut this section out and replace it.

The attached photo shows the moulded plastic spring removed.

I then drilled through the hinges and fitted a small length of 1.5mm diameter brass tube.

To fabricate the spring, i used a piece of solder wound around the brass tube and cut to suit. I then completed the hatch with the part-works supplied PE.

I then made up the search periscope mast housing as per the part-works instructions. Similar to the hatch, this will be painted and weathered separately before fixing in place.

I then made the attack periscope mast housing and will paint and weather as a separate item.

The difference between the search and attack periscopes is that the search periscope is binocular, while the attack periscope is monocular and thus smaller in cross section and less visible, hence its name.

The attached photo shows all of the masts and periscope housings temporarily fitted to give an idea of how they will look. As I've mentioned before, all of these items will be painted and weathered separately prior to fitting.
